Siliguri Orthopaedic Society is a large professional organization, having more than 50 active members. It is a vibrant organization which focuses on academics, research, social networking. It is actively engaged in various academic and social works. Siliguri Orthopaedic Society’s history of birth and development is closely coordinated with that of West Bengal Orthopaedic Association (WBOA)and Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) for many years.
Initially known as Siliguri orthopaedic club, it was formed on the year 1993 by the active initiative of Dr A K Sasmal, Dr Amal Basak, Dr A K Chaudhari, Dr Jibesh Roy Choudhury and Dr Dilip Majumdar and included very few members. With the active efforts of the then members of the fraternity, the club was given shape and form and was registered in the name of Siliguri Orthopaedic Society on 17th February,2003.
The activity of the Siliguri Orthopaedic Society slowly gathered momentum in subsequent years. Monthly clinical meeting, Journal Club meeting, Unsolved case bimonthly meeting, Cadaveric Workshop, Seminars, Symposium, Social network, disaster management exercise, meeting and public awareness programme run in schedule. Siliguri trauma conference (STCON) is the annual trauma conference of Siliguri Orthopaedic Society. The society has had many workshops and conferences to its name which were conducted quite successfully. It has conducted 2 WBOACON in the year 2000 &2010.
Also foot and ankle conference was held by the society. The society also conducts a yearly Arthroscopy live surgery meet.
In West Bengal, Siliguri Orthopaedic Society became first registered orthopadic society at district level and is considered the most active orthopaedic society at district level. It also had own office at Asthi Apartment, 8 Nandlal Basu Road, Collegepara, Siliguri 734001 and later shifted new office at Room no 0424, Block F,City Centre, Uttorayon, Matigara, Darjeeling, Siliguri 734010.
Dr A K Sasmal, Dr A Basak, Dr A K Chaudhary and Dr K C Mohpal deserve credit for birth and development of Siliguri Orthopaedic Society.
